February is American Heart month, a time to recognize the importance of cardiovascular health for all. Since heart disease and stroke combined are the leading causes of death in our country, its important to do as much as possible to live heart-healthy lives. Regular physical activity, healthy nutrition, adequate sleep and a stress management plan are all a necessary part of prevention.

Did you know that acupuncture has been proven to increase circulation, improve cardiac contractility (ie. pumping efficiency) and decrease blood pressure? Numerous research studies have proven this to be true.

Chinese medicine also views the heart as the residence for the mind, spirit or “shen” and emotions. In order for true heart health to occur, the shen has to be healthy. How can this occur? Cultivating a connection with others, a sense of community, volunteerism, creating a purpose in life beyond the self, meditation, spiritual practice, pranayama, yoga, Qi Gong, or Tai Chi are just a few ways. For health and wellness to occur, there can be no separation of body, mind and spirit.

The heart is the emperor of health and wellness. Treat your heart well, and it will reward you with many blessings.

Wishing you health and wellness now and always,
Cathleen
